Calhoun finishes spring semester with academic honors

Calhoun Community College athletes were once again rewarded for their stellar work in the classroom, as 16 Warhawks players were recognized by the National Junior College Athletic Association with academic honors.

The NJCAA honors three All-Academic Student-Athlete Awards with qualifying grade point averages for each honor.

The NJCAA All-Academic First Team, with a 4.0 GPA included baseball player Jonathan Coleman, men's golfer John Komara and softball player Sydnee Uhlman.

Several more Calhoun athletes were named All-Academic Second Team, with GPAs between 3.8 and 3.99. Baseball players Charles Crane and Jemison Stennis and softball players Baleigh Robertson, Elkmont's Dakota McCurley, Mallorie Davis, Shayla Carroll, Breann Biddle and Makaila Aday were honored.

All-Academic Third Team members, with grade point averages between 3.6 and 3.79, were baseball players Colin Chamblin and Larry Meisner, men's golfer Trey Poteet, and softball players McKenna Rose and Demarie Corley.

Sophomore student athletes completed the spring semester with a 53 percent graduation rate. The athletic department anticipates the graduation rate will increase to 91 percent at the end of the summer semester.

The women's golf team led the pack with a 100 percent graduation rate, followed by the softball team at 93 percent, baseball at 92 percent and men's golf at 75 percent.

The NJCAA recognized the softball team as an honorable mention Academic Team of the Year with a 3.46 GPA.

Athletic honors included golfer Sam Murphy, who was named a NJCAA All-American honorable mention; softball player Sydnee Uhlman, named to the ACCC All-Northern Team; and baseball player Will Sipes, who was also named to the ACCC All-Northern Team.

Twelve Calhoun athletes have signed athletic scholarships for transfer to various universities or colleges
