No. 9 Wallace State men’s golf finishes 3rd in WSCC Invitational; freshman Matt Smith earns All-Tournament honors

HANCEVILLE, ALA. — Wallace State men's golf freshman Matt Smith earned All-Tournament honors Tuesday as the 9th-ranked Lions finished third in their annual Fall Invitational held at Cross Creek Golf Course.

Smith, a Clements graduate, finished with a 6-under par 210 in his first collegiate tournament. Smith opened the tournament on Monday with a 72 over the opening 18 holes. He carded a 3-under 69 in the second round and again on Tuesday in the final round.

Smith finished third individually behind Calhoun's Sam Murphy (13-under 203) and Mississippi Gulf Coast's Jon Hopkins (9-under 207).

Wallace State also finished third collectively, carding a 4-under 860 (286-295-289). Mississippi Gulf Coast won the invitational title with a 16-under 848. Central Alabama was tournament runner-up with a 14-under 850.

Sophomore Anthony Lumpkin finished 10th overall for Wallace State, carding a 1-under 215 (71-71-73). Lumpkin was named to the NJCAA All-District team as a freshman for the Lions.

Freshman Carter Goodwin tied for 17th, finishing with a 2-over 218 (71-76-71) for the Lions. Brody Simmons and Conner Bruce each finished with a 3-over 219.

Hunter McKelvy, Kenlee Nix, Garrison Smith and Jordan Hartsell rounded out the Wallace State field.

Wallace State hosted 15 teams overall during the Invitational – its largest field thus far. Teams not previously mentioned that competed were Eastern Florida State, Meridian (Miss.) CC, Snead State, Coastal Alabama, Jeff State, Marion Military Institute, Northeast CC, Georgia Northwestern Tech and Andrew College.

Wallace State's next tournament is Oct. 6-9 at the NJCAA Division I Tournament Preview at Melbourne, Fla.
