Snead State Expanding Athletics with Men’s and Women’s Golf

Boaz – Snead State Community College’s athletic program will soon expand with the addition of a men’s and women's golf team, scheduled to kick-off in August with the start of the 2016 fall semester.

The teams will compete in the Alabama Community College Conference and the National Junior College Athletic Association.  There will be eight scholarships available for each team, which fully fund the cost of books, tuition and fees. Walk-on opportunities are also available. Open tryouts for vacant positions will be held in late May.

“We are excited to announce the addition of golf to our existing athletic programs,” said Snead State Athletic Director Mark Richard. “This addition will not only provide more opportunities for local student-athletes but will also enhance the overall complete college experience for all of our students.”

In addition to men's and women's golf, Snead State athletics also feature men's and women's basketball teams, volleyball, cheerleading, dance team, baseball, softball and women's tennis.

Chuck Kalanick was named head coach of the golf teams this week. Kalanick has over 13 years of coaching experience in golf. He has also coached basketball, track and field and cross country. He is a retired elementary and middle school math teacher.

“I’m really excited to have this opportunity to be the head coach of the Snead State men’s and women’s golf teams. I look forward to building a successful golf program and cultivating these young men and women into mature, productive members of the community who will make Snead State very proud,” said Coach Kalanick, who moved to Alabama from Pawleys Island, SC.

“I look forward to working with a new community and to helping ensure the members of my teams become graduates of Snead State Community College.”

Kalanick holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Bloomsburg State University. He also holds a Masters of Education degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He has also served as a communications technician in the United States Navy.

“We are excited to have Coach Kalanick join the Parson coaching staff,” said Richard. “With his experience and knowledge, he will be a great asset to Snead State and to the men and women on his team. He has committed to join us in assisting our student-athletes to a promising future as college graduates.”

Coach Kalanick is currently searching for assistant coaches for the men’s and women’s teams to join him. Those interested should contact him for more information.

High school golf coaches are also encouraged to contact Coach Kalanick if they have any players interested in playing at Snead State. Players should also visit snead.edu/golf and fill out the player questionnaire. He can be reached by emailing ckalanick@snead.edu or by calling (205) 217-6390.
