ASCC basketball teams wrap up first half of season

MONROEVILLE – Alabama Southern's Basketball Teams wrapped up the first half of the season Monday night, Dec. 15 with a road trip up to Etowah County to do battle with Gadsden State's Cardinals.

Action began with the Lady Eagles, who fell to the homestanding Lady Cardinals 95-57. GSCC jumped out to a 51-27 lead at the half then outpaced ASCC 44-30 in the second half to take the win.

Oleightra Nance and Alexandria Guice paced the Lady Eagles with 12 points each while Cindy Brown and Jasmine McCants had nine points each. Defensively, McCants had eight rebounds in the contest.

The Eagles lost a heart-breaker to the Cardinals, falling by three points, 72-69. Gadsden State claimed a 37-31 lead at the half but ASCC emerged from the locker room and went on a 38-35 tear in the second half. The surge though could not propel the Eagles to victory and they lost by three.

Charlie Wilson led the effort for the Eagles with 18 points in the game. Antonio Chapman followed with 14 while Johnny Stallworth had 13. Desmond Williams and Earl Brown had 11 points each in the game. Defensively, Desmond Williams had eight rebounds followed by Wilson and Brown with six each.

The Lady Eagles finish the first half of the season with a 5-10 mark while the Eagles fell to 3-12 with the loss to the Cardinals.

The "second season" opens for the Eagles in January as they begin conference play to see which teams will make the tournament and which ones will stay home in March. Both Eagle squads have faced off against top-notch competition in the first half of the season.

The Eagles return to the hardwood on January 8, 2015 when they travel to Andalusia to take on the Saints of LBW Community College. Tipoff for the Lady Eagles is at 5:30. The Eagles play at 7:30.
