Eagles Fall To Faulkner, Look To Rebound Against Enterprise State Thursday Night

BAY MINETTE – Alabama Southern's Lady Eagles fought hard but came up five points short Thursday night in a conference duel with the Lady Sun Chiefs of Faulkner State in Bay Minette.

Homestanding Faulkner staked out a 28-26 lead at the half but Coach Trent Eager's Lady Eagles, who entered the game tied with the Lady Sun Chiefs for first in the Alabama Community College Conference Southern Division, fought back, outscoring Faulkner 35-33 in the second half, ending regulation in a 61-61 knot. Faulkner managed to outgun the Lady Eagles 14-9 in the overtime session to take the five-point win, 75-71.

Jasmine McCants paced the Lady Eagles with 21 points in the game followed by Lakeshia Pickens with 15 and Leightra Nance with nine. Defensively, McCants had nine rebounds while Lakeyia Dejarnette recorded four steals in the game.

The loss drops the Lady Eagles to 8-11 on the season and to 3-1 in conference play. Faulkner improved to 3-0 in conference play.

Faulkner State 80, ASCC 72

In men's action, the Sun Chiefs, who sit atop the Southern Division with a 4-0 record, downed the Eagles 80-72 in a tightly-fought contest.

Faulkner led by five points at the half, 30-25 and managed to outscore the Eagles 50-47 in the second half to take the 80-72 win.

Antonio Chapman paced the Eagle effort with 22 points in the game followed by Charlie Wilson with 21 points. Desmond Williams rounded out the scoring leaders with 12 points. Defensively, Wilson had 11 rebounds and Johnny Stallworth had four steals.

The loss drops the Eagles to 4-15 overall and to 1-3 in conference play.

Upcoming Action

Both teams are still very much in the hunt for the conference tournament and how they fare over the coming weeks will determine their fate.

On Thursday, Jan. 22, the Eagles will host Enterprise State Boll Weevils. Action starts with the Lady Eagles tipping off at 5:30 followed by the Eagles at 7:30.

The Eagles will play the Warhawks of Jeff Davis Community College in Brewton on Monday, Jan. 26. Tipoff is at 7:30. There will be no game for the Lady Eagles that night.

Both teams will be in action at home on Thursday, Jan. 29 as they will play host to Wallace State-Selma. Action is at 5:30 for the Lady Eagles and 7:30 for the Eagles.

On Saturday, Jan. 31, Alabama Southern will hold its homecoming against Gadsden State. The Lady Eagles begin at 2:00 followed by the Eagles at 4:00.
