Bishops State's Shelwood to be inducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame

Johnny D. Shelwood, Jr. received the distinct honor on Monday, March 14, 2016 as being named an inductee into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame. The class of inductees will be inducted on April 21, 2016 at the Battle House Hotel. Shelwood is presently the head basketball coach at Bishop State Community College. He has been coaching the men's basketball team for over 20 years and led the team this year to the playoffs for their division.

Shelwood was recently named Coach of the Year for 2015-2016 by the ACCC (Alabama Community College Conference) for the South. The ACCC is a collegiate athletic conference that is part of the (NJCAA) National Junior College Athletic Association and located in Region XXII. There are 18 members of the conference which is comprised of more than 80 individual teams with more than 1,600 student athletes.

Coach Shelwood has a very distinguished sports career in the Mobile community. Prior to his tenure at Bishop State Community College, he was the head basketball coach at John L. Leflore High School where his teams won more than 400 games which included two state titles in 1986 and 1989. He was the state of Alabama's coach of the year in both 1986 and 1989.
