ASCC edges Meridian in Monroeville

MONROEVILLE – Alabama Southern's Eagles edged the Wildcats of Meridian Community College 82-81 in Monroeville Thursday night, Dec. 1.

The Eagles trailed Meridian 42-39 after the first half but rallied for a 43-39 run in the second half to take the one-point win.

Khaliel Spearman led the effort with 19 points in the game followed by Daniel Kinchen with 16 points, Mike Davis with 11 and Xavier Johnson with 10. Defensively, Christopher Colon, Kinchen and Davis all pulled down five rebounds each while Spearman recorded four steals in the game.

The win upped the Eagles to 4-4 on the season.

The Lady Eagles dropped a four-point decision to the Lady Wildcats in overtime, 59-63. The two teams battled closely throughout the game, ending regulation knotted up at 50-50. In the overtime period, MCC went on a 13-9 run to take the win.

The loss drops the Lady Eagles to 1-7 on the season.

On Wednesday, Nov. 30, the Eagles traveled to Niceville, Florida to do battle with the Raiders of Northwest Florida State College, one of the premiere teams in the nation.

The Raiders downed the Eagles 132-95. Northwest Florida jumped out to a 56-50 lead at the half but the Raiders mounted a 76-45 run in the second half to take the 132-95 win.

Khaliel Spearman scored 24 points to lead the Eagle effort. He was followed by Daniel Kinchen with 18 points. Christopher Colon scored 14 points in the game while Mike Davis added 13 points.

Defensively, Braeden Stewart pulled down seven rebounds while Kinchen had two steals.

The teams will be in action in Monroeville Tuesday, Dec. 6 against Shelton State. The Lady Eagles start things off at 5:30 followed by the Eagles at 7:30. On Dec. 8, the Lady Eagles travel to Gulf Coast State College in Panama City. Tipoff for that game as not yet been set.

The teams have Delgado Community College coming in to Monroeville on Dec. 13 and Albany Tech of Georgia coming to Monroeville on Dec. 15. Those games tip off at 5:30 with the Lady Eagles and 7:30 with the Eagles at the Cooper Center in Monroeville.
