Murphy competes in U.S. Amateur

RUSTON, La. – Incoming Louisiana Tech junior golfer Sam Murphy will take part in the most noteworthy amateur golf tournament in the word this week, as the Tech transfer competes in the 2019 U.S. Amateur Championship at the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina, beginning this Monday.

Murphy is set to tee off for his first round on Pinehurst #4 at 8:41 a.m. CT Monday morning. His second round will begin Tuesday afternoon at 1:56 p.m. CT on Pinehurst #2. If Murphy is among the lowest 64 scores after the first 36 holes, he will enter into match play on Wednesday.
 
The U.S. amateur is the leading annual golf tournament in the United States for amateur golfers.
 
Murphy will join the Bulldogs for the 2019-20 season after spending the past two years at Calhoun Community College. He was ranked as high as 18th in the NJCAA rankings and won five events at the junior college level, including the Trojan Invitational, the Snead State Invitational, the Wallace State Invitational, the Northeast Invitational and the District Tournament (scoring average of 68.7). He was named second team Ping All-American in 2018 and first team freshman Ping All-American in 2017.
