Caleb Cashion | Wallace-Dothan: ACCC Beyond the Sport

Caleb Cashion started playing baseball at a young age thanks to his parents, and he's had a passion for the sport ever since.

"Baseball has been my whole life, that's all there is to me. I started travel ball at seven or eight years old. When I got into high school for my 8th grade year, it was summer only really but they had a fall season too if you wanted to play but mostly during the summer waking up at 6am travel to Atlanta playing in tournaments and just compete with the best," said Caleb.

He currently plays shortstop for Wallace Community College-Dothan, and he says working that position is no easy task.

"It's really not that hard to watch it, but when you're playing it, you have to be able to cover all the ground from second base back to third. You have to have a good range and everything so it's pretty difficult to be the shortstop."

Caleb says being accountable, having the same end goal, and communication is what teamwork is all  about.

He put emphasis on the communication aspect and here's why.

"I do have moderate to severe hearing loss. I lost it when I was about three or four years old. I've been wearing hearing aids all my life," said Caleb. "So that's pretty much an adversity and I had to overcome it by trying to pay attention to people when they are speaking to me. Making sure I understand them clearly. It's helping me alot with how to overcome things."

"Maybe another thing that's harder for me is to hear when the ball is headed to the outfield sometime when the catcher is trying to tell me what position to throw it to. I tell my teammates to speak up so I know I'm throwing it to the right place," said Caleb.

This season the goal he says is to win and go to the Grand Junction, and as a freshman at Wallace Dothan, he's thankful for the leadership of Coach Buentello. ( Niko Buentello) .

"He's a cool guy, straight with you, and told me everything I needed to know. That's the kind of person I like who will give it to you straight. During my recruiting process Coach Buentello reached out to me and (he) came to some of my games," said Caleb.

"We were able to form a really good relationship and that's where I wanted to be. Somewhere, that I already had a relationship with the coach that I know wants me there. That's why I wanted to come to Wallace, and they have had great success in sending guys to four-year schools and a great program for winning," said Caleb.

For fun, you'll probably catch Caleb hanging with friends, juggling, or playing the playstation. With it being his first year he's already loving college life, both on and off the field.

"I made more friends just being with these kids. And it's helping me alot getting to know people. Certain things around here. Learn some things with baseball that more people that have played longer than me at the college level.  I am able to gain experience from them."

He may seem calm, cool, and collected, but Caleb would describe his personality as outgoing, but serious when it comes to playtime.

A mantra he lives by is:

"I usually like to go by live this day as it's your last day on earth. Do whatever you can and want to do, because tomorrow is never guaranteed," said Caleb.
